Cabbage rolls have to be among my favorite foods, except bacon. When I saw my grandmother make it for the first time, I was not quite sure if I was going to like them. I was not sure about the cabbage and the the meat and rice. Thankfully, my grandmother made me try one and boy now I am I in love with this meal!
Cabbage rolls are pretty simple to make. All it takes it cabbage, rice, meat and tomato sauce.
If you are like me, then you will make double, triple or even quadruple the recipe! I love making extra and putting them in the freezer for a quick and easy meal.
Ingredients
1 head of cabbage
1 pound of ground beef or turkey
1 can of tomato sauce
1 cup white rice
First thing you want to do is tear apart the cabbage and rinse it off. Cabbage is pretty simple to take apart. After you get your leaves, you want to place them in a saucepan on the stove. You want the leaves to get flimsy so you can wrap it around the hamburger. You don’t have to boil the water, just get it hot enough that the leaves become more easy to manage.
While the cabbage leaves are cooking, you can take your rice and get it cooking as well. You can just follow the directions on the box. Some people don’t cook the rice, but I prefer it. I did it one time with not cooking the rice and it did not taste the same.
Once the rice is cooked, you can mix with your ground beef or turkey. Be careful as the rice will be hot! You just take a handful of ground beef and some rice and mix it together. You want to shape it kind of like an egg. My dad always said that they looked like alien eggs.
You take your ground beef and rice mixture and wrap a cabbage leaf them. Since the leaves were cooked, it should be pretty easy. Some people use tooth picks to hold it together, that is entirely up to you!
After you have wrapped your cabbage roll, you can take some tomato sauce and put a light glaze on top. Sometimes I add the tomato sauce on the inside. Just depends on the mood that I am in!
Now you can place the cabbage rolls in a pan in the oven. I set the over to 370 to be safe. You can use aluminum foil to cover them if you would like, I do it sometimes but it makes it harder to check on them. I usually cook my cabbage rolls for about 30 minutes and I take them out and check to see how well they are done. Sometimes I have to place them back in.
Once they are done you can enjoy a nice stuffed cabbage roll!
Let me know what you think!
